Most folks get this wrong, Here Is what the cupboards above your fridge are for!

There’s something incredibly satisfying about a well-organized home—where everything has its place, even the most overlooked spots. One of those often-forgotten areas? The small cupboards perched above the refrigerator. At first glance, they seem awkward and inconvenient, but with the right approach, they can become some of the most functional storage spaces in your kitchen.

If you’re like most people, those upper cabinets might just be collecting dust or storing random clutter. But once you understand their real purpose, you’ll never see them the same way again.

Growing up, I never thought much about organization. But thanks to my mother—whose home always looked ready for a magazine spread—I learned to appreciate order and space-saving tricks. One of her best tips was how to smartly use those upper fridge cupboards, and it’s something I now swear by.

They may not be ideal for everyday items like plates or cups—too high, too impractical—but they’re perfect for things you don’t reach for often. For instance, bulky kitchen gadgets like food processors, blenders, waffle irons, and slow cookers fit nicely up there. You don’t use them every day, so why should they take up prime countertop or cabinet real estate?

That space is also ideal for long-shelf-life foods like canned goods or baking staples. Got a stash of pumpkin puree for that once-a-year pie? Or baking powder and decorative sprinkles you only use during the holidays? Store them up high where they’re safe and out of the way until needed.

It’s also a smart place for cookbooks. If you’ve got a few beloved recipes you want to keep accessible but not crowd your counters, stack them neatly above the fridge. They’ll stay clean and easy to grab when inspiration strikes.

Pantry overflow? Think about your spices, sauces, or dry goods you buy in bulk. With a compact spice rack or small containers, the top cupboard becomes an extension of your pantry. Similarly, household items like kitchen towels or napkins—especially if bought in bulk—can be stored up there and rotated as needed.

And don’t forget about fine china or glassware reserved for special occasions. Keeping those delicate items out of reach helps prevent accidental chips or breaks—especially if you have young kids at home.

Of course, safety matters. Always use a sturdy step stool or small ladder to access items stored up high, and avoid placing anything too heavy up there. Also, remember the area above the fridge tends to be warmer, so it’s not ideal for storing perishables or items sensitive to heat.

So next time you glance up at those little-used cupboards, don’t dismiss them as awkward or pointless. With a little creativity and planning, they can become one of the most efficient and space-saving features in your kitchen. Your fridge-top cabinets might just be the hidden gem your home’s been waiting for.
