Matthew McConaughey praised for his gesture to Prince William and Kate Middleton at Wimbledon

Matthew McConaughey has been widely praised for his gracious and respectful behavior toward Prince William and Kate Middleton during their recent appearance at Wimbledon.

The royal couple attended the match with Prince George and Princess Charlotte to witness Jannik Sinner make history as the first Italian man to claim a Wimbledon singles title, triumphing over Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.

Among the star-studded audience were celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Paul Mescal, and McConaughey, who was seated directly behind the royals during the match.

After the final, Sinner described his meeting with the royal family as “amazing” and gifted autographed tennis balls to the young royals.

“I’ve been lucky to meet her (Kate) and the whole family, and it was a very nice moment,” he shared.

While the match and celebrations drew plenty of attention, fans online were particularly focused on McConaughey’s subtle yet respectful gesture when the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived.

A clip shared by Wimbledon captured the moment the actor rose to his feet as William and Kate entered their box—something viewed as a traditional mark of respect in the UK, though not expected from Americans.

Viewers on social media praised McConaughey’s gesture.

One commented, “Matthew McConaughey standing to applaud the Prince & Princess of Wales.

What a lovely southern gentleman.” Another user described the Oscar-winning actor as “classy,” while others admired him as “the coolest man alive” and “a man raised right.”

Following the match, Kate Middleton presented the winner’s trophy to Sinner and awarded the runner-up prize to Alcaraz.

As she stepped onto Centre Court, a fan shouted, “I love you, Kate,” and the princess stopped to chat with ball boys and girls before heading to the podium.

Earlier in the day, the royal family met 11-year-old Ambrose Caldecott, who underwent chemotherapy over the past year and was chosen to perform the ceremonial coin toss.

Diagnosed with bone cancer in March 2024, Ambrose shared his journey with Kate.

“You’ve been so brave,” she told him warmly.

“Good luck today, we’ll be cheering you on.”

Kate, who publicly revealed her own can.cer diagnosis in 2024, has since announced she is in remission.

Reflecting on their conversation, Ambrose said, “We talked about tennis, our favorite sports, and what I went through last year.

She said she understood, having gone through something similar herself.”
