Chicago crime: At least 34 people shot since Thursday in Chicago

It has been a violent Fourth of July weekend here in Chicago with two mass shootings and at least 34 people shot since Thursday evening, including four fatalities.

The Brief

    • At least 42 people have been shot and four killed so far during the Fourth of July weekend in Chicago, according to police.
    • The shooting incidents included two in which at least four people were shot.
    • The especially violent holiday weekend comes after Chicago recorded the fewest homicides during the first six months of the year in a decade.

CHICAGO – At least 42 people have been shot, four fatally, so far during the Fourth of July weekend in Chicago since Thursday evening, according to police reports.

The victims of the shootings ranged in age from as young as 16 to as old as 52.

What we know:

Chicago police have reported nearly 30 shooting incidents since around 5 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday morning.

The three people killed included a 16-year-old girl, a 36-year-old man, a 46-year-old man, and a 52-year-old man.

The shooting incidents included two incidents in which at least four people were shot.

Seven people were shot in the 4800 block of S. Justine Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood late Friday night. The victims included four women and three men between the ages of 21 and 42, police said.

Four people were shot in the 2700 block of S. California Boulevard early Saturday morning in Little Village. The victims included a 32-year-old man, a 26-year-old man, and a 25-year-old man, who were all listed in critical condition. A 33-year-old man was shot and listed in fair condition.

There were other violent incidents that didn’t include shootings as well.

A woman was charged in connection with the stabbing of three children, including one fatally, and an arson in Logan Square on Friday.

Late Saturday night, a 56-year-old man was killed during a fight on a downtown CTA platform.

The backstory:

The especially violent holiday weekend comes after Chicago recorded the fewest homicides during the first six months of the year in a decade.

There were 192 homicides reported in Chicago between Jan. 1 and June 30, according to data from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The data point represents about a 33% decrease compared to the first six months of 2024.

It’s also a notable marker since Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city could see fewer than 500 homicides this year, which has not been seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thursday, July 3 since 5 p.m.

  • A 49-year-old man was shot in the groin in the 300 block of E. Kensington. He was listed in serious condition.
  • A 40 year-old man was shot in thigh while inside a car when another car approached in the 300 E. 117th St. He was listed in serious condition.
  • A 36 year-old man was shot multiple times in the 0-100 block of N. Hamlin. He was listed in serious condition.Bernard Butler, 44, of Chicago, was arrested and charged with one felony count of attempted murder, one felony count of aggravated battery and discharge of a weapon, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, three felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, and one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

Friday, July 4

  • A 47 year-old man shot in right flank while riding on a bicycle in the 3400 block of W. Cermak. He was listed in serious condition.
  • A 20-year-old man was shot after being involved in an argument while driving and suffered a graze wound to the left eye in the 9700 S. Harvard. He was listed in good condition.
  • A 52-year-old man was found unresponsive in the 3400 block of W. 62nd Place with a gunshot wound in the back. He died at the scene.
  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the neck while on the sidewalk in the 300 block of N. Cicero Avenue. He was listed in critical condition.
  • A 33-year-old woman was outside int he 1300 block of N. Springfield when she was shot in the right foot. She was listed in good condition.
  • A 34-year-old man was shot in the left hand in the 5900 block of S. Justine St. He was listed in good condition.
  • A 38-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks when someone in a dark sedan opened fire in the 8500 block of S. Rhodes. She was listed in good condition.
  • A 35-year-old man was shot in the right thigh and a 16-year-old girl was shot in the throat in the 1200 block of E. 83rd Street. The man was listed in good condition, but the girl died at a hospital.
  • A 25-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in the 7600 block of S. Bishop. He died at the hospital.
  • A 38-year-old man was shot and suffered a graze wound to the thigh in the 6400 block of S. Yale. He was listed in good condition.
  • Seven people were shot when two gunmen opened fire into a crowd in the 4800 block of S. Justine St. A 42-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were listed in critical condition. A 21-year-old woman, a 21-year-old man, a 29-year-old man, and a 25-year-old man were listed in serious condition. A 27-year-old woman was listed in good condition.
  • A 41-year-old woman was shot in the right forearm when she was outside in the 6800 block of S. Calumet Avenue. She was listed in good condition.
  • A 36-year-old man was shot in the head in the 6400 block of S. Winchester Avenue. He died at the hospital.

Saturday, July 5

  • A 37-year-old man was shot in the right forearm in the 6000 block of S. Ashland. He was listed in good condition.
  • A 21-year-old man was shot in the left leg and right knee in the 5900 block of S. Damen. He was listed in good condition.
  • Four people were shot when an SUV drove up and someone inside opened fire into a parked car int he 2700 block of S. California Boulevard. A 32-year-old man, a 26-year-old man, and a 25-year-old man were all listed in critical condition. A 33-year-old man was listed in fair condition.
  • An 18-year-old man was shot in the right ankle and a 19-year-old man was shot in the right thigh in the 1500 block of W. 71st Street. Both men were listed in good condition.
  • A 30-year-old man was found unresponsive in the 1000 block of N. Lavergne Avenue with a gunshot wound to the head. He died at the scene.
  • A 46-year-old man was inside a car in the 800 block of N. Cambridge Avenue when he was shot multiple times in the back. He died at the scene. One person is in custody.
  • A 19-year-old man was shot in the right abdomen when he was driving in the 2300 block of S. Whipple. He took himself to the hospital and was listed in good condition.
  • A 47-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the 2600 block of S. Central Park Avenue. He took himself to the hospital and was listed in critical condition.
  • A 43-year-old woman was shot in the left leg in the 9400 block of S. Union. She was taken to a hospital in good condition.

Sunday, July 6 (as of 8:07 p.m.)

  • A 41-year-old man was shot by someone on a motorbike who drove by and opened fire, hitting him in the chest in the 700 block of E. 60th Street. The victim took himself to the hospital and was listed in critical condition.
  • A 26-year-old man was shot by someone driving past him in a dark car in the 4100 block of W. Carroll Avenue and was hit in the right wrist and abdomen. He was taken to the hospital in good condition.
  • A 33-year-old man was shot when a red car drove past him and someone inside opened fire, hitting him in the left clavicle in the 5300 block of S. Kedzie. He was taken to a hospital in fair condition.
  • A 19-year-old man sustained two gunshot wounds to his chest and three gunshot wounds to his right leg in the 9600 block of S. Brennan Avenue. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
  • A 19-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk, felt pain and realized he had been shot in the 3800 block of W. 30th Street. He sustained gunshot wounds to his back and right thigh. He went to the hospital in good condition.
