Donald Trump has been diagnosed with a chronic disease, with the White House releasing a statement after widespread speculation.
The revelation came after reports of leg swelling and noticeable bruising on Trump’s hands raised eyebrows online.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt addressed the press on Thursday, calling the condition known as chronic venous insufficiency a “benign and common” issue that typically affects older individuals, per Forbes.
“It’s a condition in which damaged veins prevent blood from flowing properly,” Leavitt explained, reading from a letter provided by Trump’s physician.
The diagnosis follows mounting public curiosity after photos appeared to show visible bruises on Trump’s hands – something Leavitt said was “consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.”
According to the National Institutes of Health, chronic venous insufficiency is generally caused by “incompetent venous valves.”
Symptoms can include leg swelling, pain, skin discoloration, itching, limb heaviness, and edema.
If left untreated, it can result in “diminished quality of life and loss of work productivity” and more serious complications such as venous ulcers. The NIH estimates around 150,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.
Trump, who at 79 is the oldest person to ever hold the U.S. presidency, has routinely made age and health a talking point in politics, most notably during his 2024 re-election campaign.
Throughout the election season, Trump repeatedly targeted then-President Joe Biden’s mental and physical health, citing signs of “cognitive decline.”
That criticism grew louder until Biden ultimately exited the race in July under pressure from within his own party, passing the Democratic torch to Kamala Harris, who later lost to Trump in the general election.
Despite public attention on his own health, Leavitt emphasized that Trump’s test results were “within normal limits” and showed “normal cardiac structure and function, no signs of heart failure, renal impairment or systemic illness.” She also stated there was “no evidence” of more serious conditions like “deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease.”
When asked whether Trump would receive any specific treatment for the condition, Leavitt declined to provide details, instead deferring to the White House physician. “We’ll leave that to the doctor,” she said.
Although U.S. presidents are not legally obligated to disclose their medical records, it has become common for them to share annual physicals and health updates.
Trump’s medical transparency – or lack thereof – has made headlines before.
During his 2015 campaign, his longtime physician Harold Bornstein famously declared he would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” Bornstein later admitted Trump had dictated the over-the-top letter himself.
