Brave 10-Year-Old Girl Marries Her Sweetheart in Heartfelt Ceremony Days Before Losing Battle with Cancer

In a moment that moved hearts across the nation, Emma Brooks Edwards, a 10-year-old girl battling terminal leukemia, fulfilled her final wish: to marry her elementary school sweetheart, DJ, in a loving and emotional ceremony surrounded by family and friends.

Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Emma’s life changed forever. When doctors informed her parents, Alina and Aaron Edwards, that no further treatment options were available, they focused on making Emma’s remaining time as magical as possible.

A Wish Unlike Any Other

While most children might ask to meet a favorite celebrity or visit a theme park, Emma had one unique dream: to become a bride and marry DJ, the boy she had adored since third grade. “She wanted to be a wife and have three kids,” her mother shared.

With just days to plan, her community and volunteers—calling themselves Emma’s Army—stepped in. Donations poured in, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation joined the effort to turn Emma’s vision into reality.

A Wedding Full of Love

On June 29, 2023, Emma arrived at the ceremony in a wheelchair pushed by her parents, wearing a stunning purple dress. Her father wheeled her down the aisle, where DJ waited to exchange vows. The children had previously attempted to marry in school at age 8, but their teacher wouldn’t allow it. This time, however, nothing stood in their way.

I thought she was the most beautiful person I ever saw,” DJ said tearfully. The couple exchanged rings, and DJ kissed his bride as their loved ones looked on in joy and sorrow.

A Lasting Legacy of Strength and Love

Emma passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023, just weeks after her wedding. Her obituary read: “Emma, our little unicorn, entered heaven and into the loving arms of her Great-grandma Frannie Annie… She was an inspiration to all she met.”

Her mother wrote, “DJ has been Emma’s ‘Boo bear’ since 3rd grade. He stood by her through everything and made her smile the whole time. DJ will forever be family.”

Emma’s story is a profound reminder of the beauty and strength that can live in the smallest hearts. In just ten years, she taught her community—and now the world—what it means to love fully and fearlessly.

Rest in peace, sweet Emma. You will never be forgotten.
